Wat was die inspirasie agter jou matriekafskeidrok?

At La Rochelle girls highschool it is a tradition that the matrics have the privilege of wearing pearl earrings in their final year of highschool, therefore the inspiration behind the beaded pearls along the neckline and slit of my dress was a tribute to my school's tradition. Throughout high school we look up to the matrics and the privilege that they have to wear pearl earrings, through my eyes wearing pearls is a symbol of grace and elegance, and incorporating them into my dress made it both personal and meaningful to me. Every pearl bead was individually sewn on by hand. The pearls are a reflection of my journey and the traditions that shaped me into the young lady I am today.

Wat beteken jou matriekafskeidrok vir jou?

My dress holds more meaning to it than 'just fabric' and pearls. It's something I looked at and am reminded of all the memories that it holds. It was stitched with love and passion, every fitting with my mom was like reaching a mile stone. Every time we would stand infront of the mirror adjusting and just imagining the final product when all these ideas come together to create a elegant evening dress. After wearing my dress I now see more than beauty but I see the countless hours that Didi spent perfecting each fine detail, and I am reminded of the pride and joy in my mothers eyes when she saw me finally wearing it.

The moment I walked in, it wasn’t just about the dress anymore. Seeing everyone’s reactions to each others dresses and the compliments that filled the room was something I’ll never forget. That morning I went through with the bold decision that changed more than just how I looked, I cut off 45cm of my hair to donate to those fighting cancer.It felt like closing one chapter and stepping boldly into another. My dress, with its pearls representing tradition and growth, and my new hair which represented giving and renewal all came together perfectly. In that moment surrounded by my friends and teachers, watching everyone’s faces light up, I realized that true beauty doesn't lie within the dress or the hairstyle it’s in the story behind them.

Next year, I’ll be studying a BA in Digital Marketing Communications at Inscape in Stellenbosch. Outside of academics, I plan to join Maties Athletics and continue with high jump. After completing my degree, I hope to further my skills by doing a 6-month photography course at ORMS in Cape Town, specialising in sports photography.
