The talented and sweet Jose De Canha Couture in Potchefstroom designed and made my matric dance dress. I went to him with a thousand ideas and he just took them on. He described my dress as a challenge in the best way. The thing he loved the most about my dress was the fact that it wasn't a dress he had to recreate from a picture of a dress that already existed. He described my dress as 'organised-chaos'. Every time he saw me in my dress he said ,"Oh my goodness. You look like a phoenix rising from the ashes."

Wat was die inspirasie agter jou matriekafskeidrok?

My inspiration behind the dress was to stand out. The movie – 'THE HUNGERGAMES', was also a big part of my inspiration, because the movies has this weird, interesting, dramatic fashion going on and I've adored and loved it since I was a little girl, because it was very out of the ordinary and so beautifully unique. I wanted something dramatic and jaw-dropping from the start. It also felt really nostalgic and like I really achieved something big with this dress because I just know the little girl inside me would've absolutely went insane over this dress.

Wat beteken jou matriekafskeidrok vir jou?

My matric dance dress means a lot to me. It was my way to get myself out in the open and the fact that no one would expect it. All my teenage years I've only wore clothes that hid myself from the world and from the judging looks of strangers. But for this dress I wanted to reveal my true self without anything hiding who I actually am. I wanted to portray my personality through this dress and it was a huge success. It showed people who I am as a person. Artistic, dramatic, witty and disorganised. And I just know the little girl inside me would've been so proud that she wore this dress.

Hoogtepunt van die matriekafskeid

It's almost impossible to choose between walking the red carpet, or my date walking closely behind me carrying my dress during the coarse of the night so no one would step on it. Or the fact that me and my best friend went to the bathroom just to gush and the girls meeting us inside the bathroom one by one and we ended up leaving our dates unattended for at least 20 minutes, just girls being girls, you know? Or my best friend using the bottom part of my dress as a blanket when she got cold while waiting outside for her parents to pick her up. But I think my favourite moment was when my date took 3 bites of something on the menu he didn't necessarily like just to try and get me to take a bite and to cheer me up. (Unfortunately for him…it did not work, but it's the thought that counts, and it was hilarious). He is such a gentleman in many ways.

I am not 100% sure where the road is taking me after Matric. I am enrolled for Psychology at NWU Potchefstroom for 2026, but I am still deciding.
